HMPI

Instructions for Authors

  • Types of articles
    • Authors may submit articles containing 1,000-4,000 words, as well as some tables or figures
    • Articles may include essays, short translational research papers, and reader responses; they should focus on actionable insights for business executives, policymakers and other leaders in the health sector, as well as provide information for faculty use and for student discussions in MBA and other business of health care classrooms.
  • Pagination and format:
    • Papers should appear in 12 point Times New Roman, single spaced with a line space between paragraphs.
    • Instead of an abstract, please provide brief answers (one or two sentences) at the beginning of your paper to the following two questions: “What is the message?” and “What is the evidence?” Please refer to previous issues of HMPI for examples.
    • Section headings should be bolded. Footnotes should be numbered at the bottom of the page; please use footnotes sparingly.
    • Tables and figures should be sent as separate files; indicate in the manuscript where they should appear in the paper.
  • Reference placement and style:
    • Please place references at the end of your article, cited in numeric order via endnotes.
    • HMPI prefers references in the style recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. The National Library of Medicine offers examples of styles for various types of references. The one difference from this format request is that, rather than abbreviate the name of a cited journal, please spell out the name of cited journals in full.
  • Submission and reviews:
    • Please send papers to Kirsten@bahm-alliance.org. Include “submission” in the subject of the e-mail and indicate if the paper is a new submission or a revision.
    • Submissions will be reviewed by the editors and by selected reviewers.
    • We strive for a rapid turnaround in reviews. To learn about our peer review process, click here.
