Editors and reviewers seek articles that are relevant to current healthcare sector challenges, offer practical solutions, promote cross-disciplinary thinking, and inform classroom discussions.
Original Research and Reviews (Narrative or Systematic)
The following outlines core sections and requirements. Headline wording must not match the section headers, just the section content requirements.
- Title: Summarizes the topic being discussed.
- Abstract: Up to 300 words, this section summarizes the research purpose/question, methodology, key findings and implications. HMPI’s format requires authors to answer the following: What is the message? What is the evidence?
- Introduction: Defines the topic and its relevance and context, including any research gaps, objectives, and hypotheses.
- Literature Review / Theoretical Background: Incorporated into a separate section or woven into the article, this information provides context for the findings and helps identify gaps, inconsistencies, or unresolved issues.
- Methodology / Methods: Includes research design, sample description, data sources and collection processes, analytical methods/statistical techniques, and reliability/validity considerations
- Results / Findings: Organized around hypotheses, themes, or research questions that are supported by tables, figures, and models.
- Discussion: This section evaluates the findings in the context of prior research and practical implications for health systems, policy, operational decision-making, etc.
- Limitations: If relevant, this section acknowledges any methodological or contextual constraints.
- Conclusion: Highlights the primary findings and contributions and may suggest future research.
- References: Align with in-text citations
- Appendices / Supplementary Material: If applicable, these can include survey instruments, detailed models, and additional tables.
- Conflict of interest and funding disclosures: Included, if relevant
Essays, Commentaries and Perspectives
These articles highlight arguments and insights, with an emphasis on trends, problem-solving, lessons learned, and practical implications. Authors have the flexibility to structure the article in ways that best support their line of reasoning but should include the following:
- Title: Reflects the central argument or perspective
- Abstract: HMPI asks authors to answer the following: What is the message? What is the evidence?.
- Introduction: Defines the topic and its relevance and context.
- Background / Context: Can include relevant literature, policy developments, industry trends, technological shifts
- Core Argument or Analysis
- Evidence and Support: Includes, and is not limited to, credible citations, examples or cases, industry evidence, and policy references.
- Implications: For management, operational, and strategic decision-making, as well as policy, health systems / markets.
- Recommendations: Can include calls to action, policy focus, and execution.
- Conclusion: Summarizes the key messages
- References: Must align with in-text citations
